Organisers of Tectonics Festival in Glasgow hoping to ‘break down musical barriers’

A festival which music-fan Jayne Maguire has described as ‘one of a kind’ is to be showcased in Glasgow this summer, on the 11th and the 12th of May. Scottish indie rockers like Aidan Moffat will be playing along with experimental composers such as Alvin Lucier. The premise behind the festival is to start breaking down the barriers which currently exist between different genres of music.

The event, entitled Tectonics Festival was first launched in Iceland one year ago by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conductor, Ilan Volkov. The BBC SSO is to serve as the host for the festival, at Old Fruitmarket and Glasgow’s City Halls. Alvin Lucier, who rarely performs nowadays, will be playing a new work he has created for two electric guitars. The composer is famed as much for his artistic installations as he is for his compositions, which is why there will also be a piece of his artwork on display by the stage for the festival.

Mumford & Sons announce new outdoor gig series

Much to the delight of folk music fans such as Jayne Maguire Barrister, Mumford & Sons recently announced that they will be playing at multiple outdoor gigs this coming year. The band, which has been nominated for several Brits awards and is fronted by singer songwriter Marcus Mumford, also has plans to invite a number of other talented musicians to perform on stage as part of their gigs.
Vampire Weekend will be performing with the band on the 19th of July at Convent Field in Lewes, along with the Sussex Wit, Johnny Flynn, Mystery Jets and the Vaccines. The series of shows, which the band has named ‘The Gentlemen of the Road Stopovers’, centre around the importance of live, collaborative music. Marcus Mumford explained that they had intentionally chosen slightly unique or unusual towns to play in, so that they can explore and find new and interesting places, and added that it will be a great privilege to show the public these lesser known, but fascinating parts of the country.

Jayne Maguire Barrister will continue to follow the big names in music.
